Beginning in 2007, a constellation of projects on the biogeochemical, physical and biological parameters of He'eia Fishpond have been conducted by members of the Department of Oceanography, part of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Since its inception, our work at He‘eia Fishpond has supported a number of graduate and undergraduate students who have worked with guidance from faculty within the Oceanography Department. 

Our group established a physical/biogeochemical observing system within He‘eia Fishpond that makes continuous measurements of fresh water inputs to the fishpond and in situ water temperature.  When linked to biogeochemical measurements, budgets constructed for salinity and nutrients can be viewed across changing climatic conditions encountered seasonally, annually, or on longer time scales.  The He'eia Coastal Ocean Observing System (HCOOS) data also provide a context within which to interpret results of process studies that seek to understand such things as benthic pelagic coupling and the impact of invasive species on nutrient cycling.
